ABOUT ME

My name is Brandon Patrick, and I am a senior studying exercise science. In Summer 2020, I will graduate with Leadership Distinction in Civic and Professional Engagement. The past 3 years at the University of South Carolina have been remarkable, and I’ve met amazing people all while learning more about who I am and how my coursework applies to the real world.

About Me: About

As a brief background, I feel I had a slightly atypical college experience at first. I never knew where my interests lied when I graduated high school in 2015. The March before graduation, I enlisted into the South Carolina Army National Guard, and that August I began 7 months of training. In March of 2016, I completed the Army’s Military Intelligence school, and I realized that I had unjustly doubted my abilities throughout my unremarkable high school career. I felt motivated to succeed, but I still had no sense of direction. I began freshman year at Newberry College, and switched majors from broadcast journalism to criminal justice near immediately, which reflected my new interest in pursuing the FBI or CIA one day. Toward the end of freshman year, I learned that Newberry was not the right fit for me, and criminal justice was not where my passion lied. While I transferred to the University of South Carolina, I realized that exercise science aligned amazingly with my lifelong interests in science, and I was stunned that I had never previously considered STEM.

The last time I had taken any kind of STEM course was in high school, and because I made average scores in those classes, I felt nervous making this complete switch in majors. However, I enjoyed my new classes thoroughly, and so working to catch up as a 2nd year in a four-year major felt a lot more attainable. Alas, now that I finally figured out which major I was most passionate about, I needed to figure out what came after undergraduate. Initially I considered physical therapy, but I decided I wanted to pursue pre-med, which surprised both me and my family given that shaky past with STEM studies. By the end of sophomore year, I finally felt acclimated to the scale of a large university, and UofSC felt like home. In Spring of 2018, I made the decision to apply to Student Government (SG), knowing I needed to start developing my extracurricular activities. Little did I realize that the organization would open up so many doors of opportunity, leading me to other organizations, incredible friendships, and opportunities for growth as a leader and person. I became exposed to individuals seeking to recruit me to our school’s oldest literary society, of which I am now a member of its officer corps. I met others who helped me join Omicron Delta Kappa, allowing me to better connect and network with the rest of our school’s student leaders. However, a vast majority of my college experience revolves around my two years in the SG Senate. I served in the 110th Student Senate as the chair of the Sustainability committee, and served my senior year in the 111th as the Speaker Pro Tempore. Outside of the University of South Carolina, I continue to serve in the South Carolina Army National Guard, and I spent roughly a year volunteering at the Prisma Health Baptist Parkridge hospital. Initially, I was a greeter and guide tasked with helping patients find their way to their appointments. I later spent the majority of my time as a Personal Touch volunteer in the Emergency Department, where I would work to help the nurses and techs with whatever they needed, as well as checking on patients to provide social support and/ or comforts they would often want. I’ve also spent time shadowing my father’s neurologist at Lexington Medical Center, as well as a vascular surgeon at Palmetto Vein & Aesthetic Center.

About Me: Text

Even now as I approach graduation, I want to continue to find ways to set myself apart, so I decided to pursue Graduation with Leadership Distinction (GLD) through the Professional and Civic Engagement (PCE) pathway. The decision came easily, but I wasn’t sure what all GLD entailed; now having gone through the process of self-reflection, I’ve gained insights that help me think about various things I’ve learned in more connected ways. In this e-Portfolio, three examples of these insights include presenting arguments more effectively, applying the scientific method to leadership roles, and emphasizing exercise as medicine for the mind. I’ve also included a Leadership Section regarding my idea to make our school’s Physical Education (PEDU) courses more integral to the Carolina Core experience, an idea which stems from my major’s teachings regarding the utility in exercise.

My involvement in leadership organizations like Student Government, Omicron Delta Kappa, as well as serving in the National Guard all coincided with the Professional and Civic Engagement pathway in GLD. This is why I chose the particular pathway, and I hoped to use the GLD experience to help me make better sense of everything I’ve accomplished so far. Looking to the past in self-reflection has reinforced my confidence in what I’ve learned, and confidence that I can apply myself when looking to the future leads me to new opportunities.
